Graphic designers aren’t mind readers. Feedback is the best piece of communication you can offer to help bring your vision, voice, and values to life. Giving feedback isn't just about what you say, it's how you say it.
This is the most important ingredient between designer and client. In good graphic design. Feedback is crucial as you work together to provide the best possible service which results in a successful project.
A designer doesn’t necessarily hate to hear “I don’t like it!” However, that expression isn’t helpful unless the client can clearly say why. It would be more helpful to say “The colors don’t seem to work with the rest of the project.” Or, “Tell me why you used that design element on page three.”
The client is best served by the designer when they articulate the issue effectively rather than offering a solution. After all, finding solutions is why you hire a design firm in the first place. Right?
Sometimes, a client brings in a photo, graphic or idea that they have become attached to. “Please use this, it’s what I want.” they say. Unaware of the perspective of the reader, the client contribution may actually distract from the message. A more effective client communication would be to explain why they like their suggestion, and ask the designer to come up with a solution.
Help your designer do the best work possible work for you and your brand.
